She turned to him, eyes searching for some sort of reassurance. She only found grim acceptance. She squared her shoulders and hefted her weapon to her chest, reaching behind her to grasp the hand of the man steadfast at her shoulder.
"You know," she began, "there are a lot of people I’d rather spend my last minute of existence with than you."
"I know," he muttered.
"But considering everything, this is okay."
"Yes," he said, turning his head to catch her gaze, diverting their attention from the crest of blue that was swiftly overtaking the sky.
They closed their eyes.
