Dan looked at his computer, then down at his desk.
He did it again.
And then again.
And then one more time before Casey yelled from the couch, "WHAT?"
Dan jumped in his chair, almost fell, really, but they both pretended not to notice.
"I, um," he said, faltering at Casey's inquiring, yet slightly annoyed, look.
"...yes," prompted Casey.
"I lost my pencil," Dan said, looking forlorn. Casey raised his eyebrows. "Pencil?"
"Pencil," Dan confirmed. "Oh," said Casey.
"Yeah," said Dan. He looked back at his computer, and Casey returned to his newspaper.
They didn't get any writing done that afternoon.
Verse:
What are they which are but nine?
Nine Muses, like the heaven's nine spheres,
With sacred tunes entice our ears.
