06 - Days of Labor (Secrets)
by SA

The business of detective work was the business of discovering secrets. It was the most basic factor of investigation: an event occurs, a person secrets away the knowledge of that event, a detective uncovers it. A long line of investigators and detectives, snoops and private eyes all did essentially the same thing, which was to find out that which people would rather you didn't know.

Funny how none of the handbooks included suggestions on how to deal with investigators who carried secrets of their own.

In part it was written all over their faces: an indiscretion with an old flame, hitting a child out of frustration and annoyance, shoplifting, parking tickets. Look deeply into their eyes, the lines of worry on their brow, and one could see that which they tried so desperately to hide.

It was the nature of humanity, he supposed, that its creatures would hide itself so.

And then, as it always did, Goren's mind turned inward. What secrets did he himself possess? Too many, he thought, and far too few shared to lessen the burden. His mind spun circles around them, webs of deceit and carefully veiled half-truths to keep the secrets from getting out of hand. For Bobby had a nasty habit of leaving his inner secrets writ plain on his face, for all those who had eyes to see them.

Fortunately for him, not many did, and his troubling thoughts and dreams and demons lie in wait another day.

Verse six:
What are they which are but six?
Six days to labor is not wrong,
For God himself did work so long.
